False Claims Act: Whistleblower Litigation
Our firm began the revolution in False Claims Act litigation in 1984 when we rediscovered this ancient statute and applied it to the case of a machinist foreman who was fired by General Electric for refusing to falsify time records on the B 1B contract. This lawsuit became the centerpiece upon which Congress molded the 1986 False Claims Act Amendments. The thousands of hours we spent working on this case and changing the law were reduced to the first treatise ever published on the False Claims Act. Our treatise has been substantially rewritten several times to reflect this rapidly expanding area of the law as viewed by the attorneys who have played a key role in the Act's development. The treatise is now in its 5th edition which was written in 2007. The new edition includes a searchable CD-Rom, another first for this area of the law. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, much of our practice was in the area of employment discrimination. In 1988, Jim Helmer co authored the first edition of Representing the Terminated Employee in Ohio, which is intended to help attorneys succeed in the representation of employees whose rights have been violated by their employers. Don't be fooled by the name: The book is based on federal employment law, and in 1997, Jim and his co author published the Second Edition, representing a substantial rewrite with detailed analysis of significant federal and state employment law decisions and legislative enactments of recent years.
