Judge (Ret.) Mark Painter, Of Counsel at Helmer Martins, presented a two-hour session on plain-language legal writing at the 2018 Midwest Regional Bankruptcy Seminar on August 23. The seminar, which attracted more than 200 lawyers from around the Midwest, was held in Cincinnati.

Stephen D. Lerner, a partner at Squire Patton Boggs, and Program Chair of the MRBS, had this to say about the talk: “Judge Painter’s presentation on legal writing was a highlight of the 2018 Midwest Regional Bankruptcy Seminar. There is no doubt that everyone in the audience of 200+ people, including the most seasoned litigators, learned many techniques for improving their writing skills. I for one sure did. Judge Painter received rave reviews and we look forward to having him back again in the future.”

Tim Hurley, a partner at Taft, Stettinius & Hollister and long-time member of the MRBS Executive Committee, commented: “Realizing how critically important good writing skills are to a lawyer’s success in every area of practice, the MRBS Executive Committee was delighted that Judge Painter was available to speak at the 2018 MRBS. He did not disappoint. His presentation provided many helpful insights and suggestions and was delivered with a light hand and considerable humor. He had the attendees’ undivided attention for two hours. And they were ready for more. Judge Painter’s book should be required reading for all new lawyers–and most of us old ones, too.”
